Beaded Ribbed Beanie

A twist on the classic 1×1 rib hat. The addition of seed stitch between the ribbed columns adds beautiful depth and texture.

What you’ll need:

Abbreviations:

  • CO: Cast on (we used the classic long-tail cast on).
  • k: knit.
  • p: purl.
  • sl1wyif: slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn held in front of your work.
  • p3tog: purl three stitches together.
  • k3tog: knit three stitches together.

Gauge:

  • 25 stitches = 10cm/4in unstretched in seeded rib stitch on 4.0mm (US size 6) needles.

Sizes:

  • This pattern is available in: Child [Adult S/M, Adult L].
    • Child: head circumference up to 53cm (21in), fits most 6-10 year olds.
    • Adult S/M: head circumference up to 58cm (23in), fits most teens and adults.
    • Adult L: head circumference up to 64cm (25in), fits larger adult heads.
  • For smaller or larger sizes, adjust the number of stitches by increments of 12.

Instructions for Knitting Flat

Brim

With smaller needles, CO 122 [134, 146] stitches.

Ribbing row: sl1wyif, k1, *p1, k1 repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat ribbing row on rs and ws until your work measures 4cm (1.5in) from cast on edge.

Body

Switch to larger needles.

Row 1 (rs): sl1wyif, *k1, p3, repeat from * until one stitch remains, k1.
Row 2 (ws): sl1wyif, k1, *p1, k1, repeat from * to end of row.
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until hat measures 19 [20.5, 21.5]cm or 7.5 [8, 8.5]in from cast on edge, then move on to the crown section.

Crown

Decrease row 1 (rs): sl1wyif, *k1, p3, k1, p3, k1, p3tog, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 2 (ws): sl1wyif, *p2, (k1, p1)x4, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 3: sl1wyif, *k1, p3, k1, p3tog, k1, p1, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 4: sl1wyif, *p2, (k1, p1)x3, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 5: sl1wyif, *k1, p3, k3tog, p1, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 6: sl1wyif, *p2, k1, p1, k1, p1, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 7: sl1wyif, *k1, p1, k3tog, p1, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 8: sl1wyif, *p2, k1, p1, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 9: sl1wyif, *k3tog, p1, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains, k1.
Row 10: sl1wyif, purl to last stitch, k1.
Row 11: k2tog to end of row.

Cut a long tail and pass it through the remaining stitches, then pull tight to bind off.

Finishing

Block the hat, seam it up, and weave in any loose ends.

Instructions for Knitting in the Round:

Brim

With smaller needles CO 120 [132, 144] stitches, place a marker and join to work in the round. Take care not to twist your stitches while joining.

Work in 1×1 ribbing until your work measures 4cm (1.5in) from cast on edge.

Body

Switch to larger sized needles.

Round 1: *k1, p3, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 2: *k1, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Repeat rounds 1 & 2 until hat measures 19 [20.5, 21.5]cm or 7.5 [8, 8.5]in from cast on edge, then move on to the crown section.

Crown

*Remember to switch to DPNs when your work starts to get tight on the circulars*

Decrease round 1: *k1, p3, k1, p3, k1, p3tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 2: *(k1, p1)x4, k2, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 3: *k1, p3, k1, p3tog, k1, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 4: *(k1, p1)x3, k2, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 5: *k1, p3, k3tog, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 6: *k1, p1, k1, p1, k2, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 7: *k1, p1, k3tog, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 8: *k1, p1, k2, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 9: *k3tog, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 10: knit.
Round 11: k2tog to end of round.

Cut a long tail and pass it through the remaining stitches, then pull tight to bind off.

Finishing

Block the hat, seam it up, and weave in any loose ends.
