Single Basketweave Beanie
An understated beanie knitting pattern featuring the single basketweave stitch.

Does anyone else find it ultra-satisfying when ribbing transitions smoothly into a pattern? I started knitting this hat with a folded brim, but I couldn’t bear to cover the perfect stitch transition so I frogged and reknit with a simple brim.
The single basketweave is a modest knitting stitch. It’s certainly no show-stopper, but the texture that it brings to this hat is stunning. It’s made purely from knit and purl stitches, making it perfect for novice knitters, but it does require some confidence following written patterns and performing repeats.
What you’ll need:
- 1 skein Draper James Cozy Wool in color Cream
- 4.0mm knitting needles (straight or 40cm circular or dpns)
- 5.0mm knitting needles (straight or 40cm circular + dpns)
- Darning needle for seaming / weaving in ends
Abbreviations:
- CO: Cast on (we used the classic long-tail cast on)
- k: knit
- p: purl
- sl1wyif: slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn held in front of your work
- cdd: Center double decrease. Slip 2 stitches as if to knit 2 together, then slip 1 more stitch knitwise. Knit those 3 stitches together from the righthand needle (2 stitches decreased)
- ssk: slip 1 stitch knitwise, slip 1 stitch knitwise, then knit those two stitches together from the righthand needle (1 stitch decreased)
- p2tog: purl two stitches together (1 stitch decreased)
- p3tog: purl three stitches together (2 stitches decreased)
Gauge:
- 20 stitches = 10cm in single basketweave stitch (unstretched) on 5.0mm needles.
Sizes:
- This pattern is available in two sizes:
- Adult Small (for 56cm head circumference)
- Adult M/L (58cm+ head circumference, fits most adults)
- For additional sizes, you can add or subtract multiples of 12 stitches.
Notes:
- This pattern can be knit flat or in the round

Instructions for Knitting Flat
Brim
CO 86 [98] stitches on size 4.0mm (US Size 6) needles.
Ribbing row 1: k1, *k1, p1, repeat to last stitch, k1.
Repeat ribbing row 1 on both sides until brim measures 3.5cm (1 ½ inches) from cast on edge. For a folded brim, continue until it measures 8cm (3 ¾ inches).
Body of hat
Switch to 5.0mm (US Size 8) needles.
Row 1 (rs): sl1wyif, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Row 2 (ws): sl1wyif, *k3, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Row 3: sl1wyif, knit the knit and purl the purls until the last stitch, k1.
Row 4: sl1wyif, *k1, p1, repeat to last stitch, k1.
Row 5: sl1wyif, p2, k1, *p3, k1, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, p1, k1.
Row 6: sl1wyif, knit the knit and purl the purls until the last stitch, k1.
Repeat rows 1-6 four times more.
Crown
Crown row 1 (rs): sl1wyif, *k1, p1, k1, cdd, (k1, p1)x3, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 2 (ws): sl1wyif, *k1, (k2, p1)x3, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 3: sl1wyif, *k1, p1, cdd, p1, k1, p3, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 4: sl1wyif, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 5: sl1wyif, *p1, cdd, p2, k1, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 6: sl1wyif, k1, *p1, k2, repeat from * to end of row.
Crown row 7: sl1wyif, *cdd, p1, k1, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 8: sl1wyif, *k3, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 9: sl1wyif, *k1, p3tog, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 10: sl1wyif, *k1, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Crown row 11: k1, then ssk to end. If one stitch remains, k1.
Crown row 12: p2tog across row. If one stitch remains, p1.
Cut a long tail, weave through remaining stitch, and pull tight to close.
Finishing
Block, seam, weave in loose ends.
Instructions for Knitting in the Round:
Brim
CO 84 [96] stitches on size 4.0mm (US Size 6) needles and join into round, taking care not to twist your work.
Work in 1×1 rib until brim measures 3.5cm (1 ½ inches) from cast on edge. For a folded brim, continue until it measures 8cm (3 ¾ inches).
Body of hat
Switch to 5.0mm (US Size 8) needles.
Round 1: *k1, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 2: *k1, p3, repeat from * to end of round.
Round 3: repeat round 2.
Round 4: repeat round 1.
Round 5: p2, k1, *p3, k1, repeat from * to last stitch, p1.
Round 6: repeat round 5.
Repeat round 1-6 four times more.
Crown
**Don’t forget to switch to DPNs when stitches get too tight on circulars.
Crown round 1: *k1, p1, k1, cdd, (k1, p1)x3, repeat from * to end of round.
Crown round 2: *(k1, p2)x3, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Crown round 3: *k1, p1, cdd, p1, k1, p3, repeat from * to end of round.
Crown round 4: *k1, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Crown round 5: *p1, cdd, p2, k1, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Crown round 6: p1, k1, *p2, k1, repeat from * to last stitch, p1.
Crown round 7: *cdd, p1, k1, p1, repeat from * to end of round.
Crown round 8: *k1, p3, repeat from * to end of round.
Crown round 9: *k1, p3tog, repeat from * to end of round.
Crown round 10: repeat crown round 4.
Crown round 11: ssk across entire round. If 1 stitch remains, k1.
