Mistake Rib Stitch
The Mistake Rib stitch puts a twist on the classic 2×2 rib. It bumps up the texture in your knitting projects by providing deep ribbed columns.
This stitch very closely resembles the No-purl Rib stitch. If you want the same effect without the purls, check it out!
Pros of Mistake Rib:
- Made of simple knit and purl stitches
- Lays flat
- Reversible
- Works perfectly in the round
Cons of Mistake Rib:
- Not as elastic as classic ribbed stitches
- The knit stitches making the columns have a tendancy to zigzag a tiny bit. If you need perfectly uniform knit columns, you should check out the No Purl Rib stitch.

- k: knit
- p: purl
Instructions for knitting the Mistake Rib:
Knitting Flat:
Cast on an odd number of stitches
Row 1 (rs): *k2, p2, repeat from * to last stitch, then k1
Row 2 (ws): *p2, k2, repeat from * to last stitch, then p1
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until desired length is reached
In the Round:
Cast on an even number of stitches and join into a round, taking care not to twist. Be sure to use a stitch marker so you don’t lose the beginning of the round.
Round 1: *k2, p2, repeat from * to end of round
Round 2: k1, p2, *k2, p2, repeat from * to last stitch, k1
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until desired length is reached
